Our story | The evolution

Our story began with a simple belief: that meaningful change in Aotearoa starts with connection -to people, to whenua, and to purpose.

When we founded Kaitiaki Collective in 2019, our focus was clear - to help Māori organisations and small businesses embed sustainability and kaupapa Māori values into their operations. Over time, our mahi expanded beyond consulting and reporting. We found ourselves supporting iwi environmental units to plan, protect and enhance their rohe, and walking alongside business owners to strengthen their foundations, from governance and strategy through to sustainability and impact.

Through that journey, one truth stood out: sustainability isn’t separate from business or culture. It’s the thread that weaves them together.

As our purpose deepened, so did our vision. What began as Kaitiaki Collective evolved into Ara Toitū - the enduring path. A name that speaks to growth, resilience, and balance. Ara Toitū reflects the dual nature of our mahi — supporting both the natural environment and the enterprises that depend on it.

Today, we stand alongside iwi, hapū and Māori-led organisations across Aotearoa, helping to design strategies that honour identity, uplift capability, and protect what matters most. Our work includes:

• Supporting iwi environmental units to deliver climate adaptation, biodiversity and resource management outcomes.

• Delivering sustainability services — from carbon reporting and emissions reduction plans to strategy development and capability building

• Supporting iwi environmental units to deliver climate adaptation, biodiversity and resource management outcomes.

• Providing business support services — from planning, proposals and mentoring to sustainability integration and funding guidance.

• Delivering resources that make sustainability and governance more accessible for small Māori businesses.

Ara Toitū represents a collective journey - a move from JUST a consultancy to collaboration, from ideas to action. We exist to help others find clarity in their purpose and confidence in their path forward.
